The Museum of Varna History is located in the building that once was
a Belgian consulate. It was erected in 1851. Later on it
functioned as a hotel. From the end of XIX c. until 1929 it was used as a
gaol.
The display presents the economic, social and cultural development
of Varna during 1878 - 1939.
On the first floor one can see the typical Varna crafts and
industry from the end of XIX c.
until the beginning of XX c., cotton mills
and metal-working enterprises, the building of the new port, the origin
and development of navigation and ship-building. There is a printing
press from the end of XIX c. displayed there; the first loom (1902) of the
cotton mill Progress, shares and samples of goods from the factories
Tekstil, Vulkan, Partamyan, etc., a packsaddle for dockers used for
transportation of loads to the port, records and models of the first
boats and ships in Varna will impress you as well.
The cartwright's and
blacksmith's workshop, the dress-making and tailoring shop, the shoemaker's
shop, various farm implements and machines have been restored in their
original form.
The second floor reveals the European architectural look of the
town - Varna as an international sea resort and the summer capital of
Bulgarian culture. Your attention will be drawn by authentic photos
of old buildings, schemes and maps of the town during XIX - XX c.,
programmes, personal articles of cultural and educational leaders,
musical instruments and learning materials.
