      During its continuous existence the town was fortified many times. Fortress walls from the following periods have been preserved:
  • Thracian - built in 8 BC from stone and mud;
  • Greek- (5 - 3 century BC) - from big stone blocks;
  • early Byzantine - (5 - 6 century) - built in " opus mixtum " - alteration of stone and brick belts; During the Middle Ages (7 - 15 century) early Byzantine fortress walls with insignificant reconstructions were used.
