The Kotel Balkan has weaned over 120 outstanding National Revival Figures. Doing the round of the four exhibition halls (Leaders, Englighteners, Rebels and Revolutionaries), visitors feel as if they have opened the most famous pages of Bulgarian history linked with the names and deeds of famous Kotel man.
Their forerunner is Sofronius of Vratsa - a wise and worthy enlightener, the first to copy the history of Paissi in 1765, the first author of the New Bulgarian printed book, and of the first Bulgarian auto-biographical work. One of his first followers was Neophit Bosveli - a fighter for the ecclesiastical freedom of the Bulgarian people, the founder of a new type of school, the author of five works. Dr. Peter Beron is the author of our first primary school book, commonly known as the Riben Boukvar, a scientist of European statute who left behind him voluminous works in five foreign languages. The second hall contains original works by Dr. V. Beron, A. Granitski and S. Izvorski - men of letters with a great contribution to the enrichment of the people's spiritual interests.
The exhibition in the third hall, linked with the personality and work of Captain G. Mamarchev - a famous warrior and the bearer of high military distinctions, Captain V. Hadjivulkov and Gadjal Voivode, reveals remarkable moments of Bulgarian history - the voluntary participation of the Bulgarians on the side of the Russians in the clashes for Christianity.
Kotel volunteer G.S. Rakovski occupies a central place among the revolutionaries. This gigantic National Revival figure is represented by a multitude of documents, portraits, facsimiles and original works. His immense and varied life of people's voivode, poet, folklorist and publicist who served his fatherland with pen and sword, sounds like a legendary truth.
The bronze pages of impressive books each one of the halls list a multitude of names whose glorious past deeds are present today and accompany us into the future. The original design of the Museum of Enlighteners is the work of a creative team headed by Merited Artist A. Neikov.
