The town of Kotel is situated
in a picturesque valley in the east part of the Balkan mountains. The
mountain around the town is very beautiful, its forms, century-old trees
and the aroma of the flowers covering the meadows during the summer are
unforgetable. The remarkable natural springs are the beginning of many
brooks and rivers as well as waterfalls. There are many interesting caves.
The richness of nature in this area is reflected
in the Museum of Nature, found in 1952 by Vasil Georgiev (1875 - 1963).
In the course of 60 years, he collected and studied samples of different
species from Kotel region. In 1951 his rich collection was highly evaluated
by the Zoological Commission of the Bulgarian Academy of Science and then
a decision was taken to give the opportunity for the public to see it.
Thus, the museum apperared.During the years, the collection was enriched to a stage when the space in the rooms was not enough for it. In 1981 a new exposition was open following the principles of contemporary ecology. There is a rich variety of species in it - different insects, fish, reptiles and various flowers as well.
The interesting collections in the Museum
of Nature in Kotel reveal the rich heritage of Bulgarian nature. |
